Yerba mate is a traditional South American drink made from the plant Ilex paraguariensis, typically consumed from a hollowed-out gourd (a maté) through a metal straw. It contains caffeine and a number of polyphenols and flavonoids linked to improved health.

Some of the evidence-based benefits of Yerba include:

Increased Antioxidant Capacity

Yerba mate is an antioxidant rich drink. Research has demonstrated increased antioxidant markers in those taking yerba mate.

Increased body fat loss

A randomised controlled trial has shown that 12 weeks of yerba mate supplementation significantly reduces body fat.

Improved heart health

Drinking yerba mate tea has been shown to improve microcirculation and is associated with a significant reduction in heart disease. Yerba also increases HDL ('good' cholesterol) and reduces total and LDL ('bad') cholesterol.

Reduced diabetes risk

Yerba might even help to protect against diabetes. In a randomised controlled, drinking 3 servings of yerba mate tea per day improved blood sugar and insulin levels.

Protects brain health

Yerba mate is associated with reduced Parkinson's disease risk.
